Inset the selection a bit, then hit Del to remove the polygons.

Switch to Vertex mode and - in the Top View - move the 4 highlighted vertices towards the tip of the handle.

Switch to Edge subobject. Select two parallel horizontal edges that define the holes in the handle, then hit the Bridge button to fill the gap between them with a new polygon.
